Yesterday at the launch I was delighted to meet Dublin local Liam Morrison, whose wife Mona Baptiste, a Trinidadian jazz singer, was the only passenger on the famous 1948 Windrush voyage to eventually settle in Ireland.

In 1937, the Belfast Telegraph published an article by a Ukrainian refugee, Maroussia Edelstyn.
The Edelstyns, a Ukrainian Jewish refugee family in 1930s Belfast.
Maroussia Zokorovich was born in 1898 to a family who owned a sugar factory outside the Ukrainian city of Konotop. In the conflicts over Ukrainian territory that arose in the wake of the First World War, she performed for soldiers as a dancer. Amid the violence, she fell in love with Max Edelstyn, a Jewish Artillery Officer in the Russian White Army.
Sophie Raffalovich, born into a Jewish family in Odesa in 1860. In her twenties, Sophie became interested in Irish nationalism and wrote to a political prisoner in Galway jail. The correspondence became a courtship and Sophie eventually married the prisoner, William O’Brien.
